Anyone expecting the release of my novel The Exile of Elindel today, please be aware that gremlins have been at work and you will have to wait a little longer for this long-awaited book. A new release date of April 18th has been set. In the meantime, here is a piece of flash fiction I wrote some time ago for a competition. The challenge was to write a story in exactly 100 words.
A SEA OF TROUBLES
Standing at the quayside, waiting to embark on a new life, he remembers his old one.
The backstreets of childhood, silted up with poverty and grime. Endless days in the mill, inhaling cotton fibres, dodging the cruel machines. His only escape the army, the horrors of war.
Returning a hero, he started a family. Typhus took them. He sold his medals and bought the ticket.
Gulls wheel overhead, their excitement echoing his. A fresh start in another land. His luck has changed.
She towers over him and he smiles up at her. A great ship with a great name: Titanic.
